I walked into Percy Jackson with my kids in tow, eighty plus dollars poorer and patting myself down furiously searching for the flask I was sure I had brought along.  I hadn’t.  Now the only thing I was sure of was that I was in for a long, boring and sober afternoon watching a damned kids movie (don’t judge me!!).  I walked out of Percy Jackson glad I wasn’t drunk and happy I had actually watched this one.  The other thing I was sure of is how hot Uma Thurman is even with a head full of snakes!

percy_jackson__the_olympians_the_lightning_thief_poster.jpgYes, Uma Thurman is Medusa, but don't let the snakes fool you, she is damn hot.  I am not quite sure how Percy was able to keep his eyes closed and not get turned to stone because there is no way I could have not looked deep into Uma’s eyes.  She is one fine goddess of the underworld!  I’m thinking Percy just hasn’t hit his MILF stage yet.  Uma, call me!  Percy Jackson and the Olympians is as entertaining for children as it is adults.  A solid mix of Harry Potter and Clash of the Titans, Percy Jackson boasts an impressive cast which included Rosario Dawson, Sean Bean, Uma Thurman, Pierce Brosnan and Brandon T. Jackson who ultimately steals the show.  The violence isn’t over the top, the bloodshed is minimal (a few cuts and bruises) and aside from one scene that had my 8yr old freaking out (you’ll know this scene when you see it - especially if you catch this movie in 3D) this movie was a great addition to our three day weekend.

Filled with Greek Mythology and the standard “the Gods are selfish” bit mixed in with your always present Good vs Evil, this movie takes a look at the complexities children deal with when faced with parental abandonment and the courage it takes to accept your fate at times.  Based on the book by Rick Riordan and tells the story of a teenage boy, Percy Jackson, who learns his long lost father is the Greek God Posiedon.  Percy is then thrust into a world where centaurs, demigods and nymphs all coexist in an effort to save the world.  Percy also learns it is up to him to save the world by returning Zeus' lightening bolt before Hades can get his hands on it and take over the world.  At times the plot travels well beyond the scope of your average youngster, ie the perils of Gods & Mortals having children, but the depth of such complexities are often glossed over by the special effects and Uma Thurman learning her head is about to be chopped off by seeing her reflection on the back of an iPhone.  Is there any corner of the universe safe from Steve Jobs and the Apple geeks?  The characters in PJ are well developed and the relationships between Percy Jackson his father, his friends, half horse Pierce Brosnan and his mother are equally developed (or at least as much as they could be for a 2hr movie geared towards 8-15yr olds).

At times the special effects look like they suffered from the current "Barackenomics" which I am sure had much to do with the need to pay Pierce Brosnan enough money to were a horses ass and not shave his entire body down for the first time in his career, but all in all I didn’t find the lack of CGI sophistication a distraction.  Director Christopher Columbus certainly knows his way around pre-teen cinema and unlike the Harry Potter movies I find to be utterly unwatchable (I won’t even get drunk to see those movies - I make my mom take the kids), I found Percy Jackson to be entertaining, endearing and all out fun.  I laughed at the same points my boys did and some times that is all it takes to make a good afternoon even better - well, that and a black kid (Brandon T Jackson) with billy goat legs and an unending lust for forest nymphs...
