At 3pm this past Saturday this dad and his boys were safely tucked into our seats. Each of us pounding fists with pride as we waived to our peeps. We sat in the theater our smuggled in candy stashed in our pockets with care. In hopes that the anti-hero Batman would soon be there. The theater buzzed with excitement and fervor. The air filled with the scents of popcorn and buzzing with arse kicking fever. Our tickets were purchased two weeks in advance. A line too long and sold out shows we could not chance. Dad was happy and his boys were filled with glee as we sat waiting for Batman soon we would see. As the screen went dark and cheers they erupted. Batman was here and the bad guys were sure to be busted. With a POW and a BANG and KAPOW for good measure. Batman hit the screen to all of our pleasure. His fists were flying and his gadgets were great. Batman was awesome and now for IMAX we can’t wait.
In an effort not to spoil the Batman plot or give away any of the amazing scenes the above poem will have to suffice as my interim review. However I will say I found The Dark Knight to be a hard punch to the gut. The lastest installment in the Batman franchise came in hard and fast, leaving the audience winded and bruised. This Batman is as emotional and intentense as it is dark and brooding. This is the Batman film that buries every film of its kind.
I will also say Heath Ledger is every bit the Joker every Joker before him should have been. Ledger takes the Joker character to the dark depths Jack Nicholson was never permitted. Ledger is tormenting, demonic, psychotic and completely out of control. The Joker’s taunting rage is only outdone by his own ability to laugh at the most inopportune times coupled with his obvious deep rooted pain and tsunami of a psychosis.
Ledger dives head first into the deep end of an empty pool and takes the audience on a journey to the center of madmans soul. Even when he doesn’t speak, Ledger makes the Joker character even more frightening than audiences had ever anticipated.
And, just when you thought the movie couldn’t get any better the hideous Two Face appears. With the introduction of a Two Face character that makes Tommy Lee Jones portrayal look more like a cheap High School play than a big budget film, Batman: The Dark Knight exposes the audience to an uncensored view of Bruce Wayne’s world and the tortured souls he must face, including his own.
Not to be outdone, Christian Bale's execution as Batman explores the deepest realms of Bruce Wayne’s struggle for a normal life while fighting his desire for Batman to be accepted by the people he unselfishly protects. Bale is as amazing as he is dark. As much as Ledger deserves the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, Bale should also be recognized for his ability to take the character of Batman back to the playboy by day and tormented savior by night.
This film's depiction of Batman stands as a true vision of the anti-hero Bruce Wayne ultimately becomes and the internal demons he wages war with in order to put on the cape and cowl so that he can become The Dark Knight.
See Batman. See it twice and then see it again in an IMAX Theater near you!
