If you are ever in San Francisco and you are traveling with children under the age of 15, do yourself and your family a favor and check out the Exploratorium. My boys and I found the Exploratorium by complete accident and I am definitely glad we did. A place built around Science, Learning and all out fun, the Exploratorium provides kids and parents alike the opportunity to learn all about the things that make science fun, weird and integral to our lives today. Not only will your kids be able to dissect a cow's eye, they will also experience everything the Exploratorium has to offer in a hands on, walking through, sitting on and riding fashion.
The San Francisco Exploratoriumis a wonder world of oddities, gross outs, loud noises, laser beams and anything else your kids will love and it is all out there for your kids to touch and play with. Nestled just below the Presidioin the Marina District, the Exploratorium is beautifully planted within the grounds of the Palace of Fine Arts. From the back of the Exploratorium you and your family can explore the beautiful statues, pillars and columns of these replicated Roman Ruins which make up the Palace of Fine Arts. Just watch out for the always hungry and very aggressive Swans who patrol the Palace Lagoon preying on gullible tourists. I am sure many of you have seen the exceptional buildings in movies such as The Rock, Kuffs, 48 Hours, Dirty Harry or Bullit (although in Bullit Steve McQueen drove past the Palace doing about 95 miles per hour).
The Exploratorium provides you and your family a plethora of Science based activities that are as fun as they are educational. Your kids will experience every kind of plant and insect life this planet has to offer while also discovering light waves and lasers. From sticking your hands into boxes filled with the most disgusting substances known to man to understanding how musical notes are generated by sound waves, your kids will certainly enjoy every minute they spend at the Exploratorium.
My only advice is to make sure you get the phone number for a cab company so you can get a ride when you are done. Trying to find a cab around the Exploratorium is a nightmare. Try sitting outside in 95 degree heat for over an hour with two tired kids and a dead cell phone....God, I love my life!
