This past Thanksgiving my family was invited to Modesto to visit family friends and enjoy the standard Turkey Day festivities we all love so much. As I am sure it is with your family, with ours those said festivities encompass a pre-party, tons of drinking, shit talking and the subsequent giving thanks while shoveling loads of empty calories, carbs, sugars, starches and alcohol down our throats as we do our best to eat quickly so as not to miss any NFL Football action. Although this year each of the games played were about as boring as the drive to Modesto from the East Bay.

Recently I took a trip to Dallas and spent a few days at the very swanky Hotel Za Za. Unlike your typical upscale joint where you find Godiva on your pillow, the Hotel Za Za leaves its guests with Ring Pops. Seriously. Ring Pops?? One other thing, after 11pm the pool of Hotel Za Za is regularly frequented by 'girls of the night'. Very young, very attractive girls of the night. Weird place. Upscale, but weird.

This week your resident single dad is recommending one of the greatest business books of all time by Jim Collins and one of my favorite films from my very own childhood......the book is Good to Great and the movie is The Monster Squad.
Good To Great by Jim Collins
While this book is actually the follow up to Built to Last, Good to Great stands on its own and is certainly one of the greatest business books I have ever read. I was lucky enough to be turned onto this book by a business consultant friend of mine and I have read and re-read this book numerous times since first purchasing it more than two years ago. What I have found to be truly fascinating about this book lies in comparing its principals to each of the many companies I have worked for and finding the errors of their ways (sort of my own internal vengeance thing).

This week your favorite single dad is recommending a great novel by Tim Dorsey and one of the greatest family movies of all time...
Atomic Lobster by Tim Dorsey
Although this is Dorsey's tenth novel and I am sure some readers will chastise me for not recommending his works in order, I recently re-read Atomic Lobster and have no choice but to tell you all to order this one ASAP. Filled with sex, violence and 'Dumb and Dumber' type action, Atomic Lobster is a fast read that will keep you laughing and entertained all the way through. Filled with strippers, drug addicts, weird Granny investigators, a band of Hillbilly killers and various other extremely nefarious characters, Dorsey's brand of comedy isn't for everyone however this fast-moving tale brings in the authors usual schtick while skewering everyone and everything along the way.
Atomic Lobster will not disappoint.
