Managing Your Demons.....

This week your resident single dad is recommending one of the greatest business books of all time by Jim Collins and one of my favorite films from my very own childhood......the book is Good to Great and the movie is The Monster Squad.

Good To Great by Jim Collins

While this book is actually the follow up to Built to Last, Good to Great stands on its own and is certainly one of the greatest business books I have ever read.  I was lucky enough to be turned onto this book by a business consultant friend of mine and I have read and re-read this book numerous times since first purchasing it more than two years ago.  What I have found to be truly fascinating about this book lies in comparing its principals to each of the many companies I have worked for and finding the errors of their ways (sort of my own internal vengeance thing).

To provide the backdrop for the book and its studies, Jim Collins and his team of researchers began their quest by sorting through a list of 1,435 companies, looking for those that made substantial improvements in their performance over time, eventually making what Collins termed is the leap from a good company to a great one. The 11 companies Collins and his crew settled on include: Fannie Mae, Gillette, Walgreen, and Wells Fargo.

Collins and his team discuss the culture, disciplines, insights, recruitment strategies, corporate alignment and the importance of Level 5 Management.  If you are in business today you need to read this book.  My personal copy is filled with highlights and places where I have even re-highlighted.  I love this book and have taken many of its suggestions into my own business practices.  Good to Great is a fast read and sucks you in from the start.  Do yourself and your career a favor and pick this book up today.

The Monster Squad

If you haven't seen The Monster Squad you need to!  When I stumbled upon this great flick while browsing the DVD section at Best Buy I immediately scooped it up.  Next to The Lost Boys and Goonies, The Monster Squad was certainly one of my favorite movies while growing up.

Grab your kids, pop a few bags of popcorn and huddle up on the couch for some great family entertainment.  The Monster Squad, much like the Goonies and the Lost Boys, is a kid's movie for the ages. Monster Squad centers around a group of young kids who have a secret Monster club dedicated to learning everything they can about such great horror mongers as the Werewolf, Dracula, The Mummy and even Frankenstein.

Our young heroes are soon thrown into a struggle to save their town, save their families and even save humanity as the monsters they study come back to life and seek to destroy an amulet that can prevent these very same monsters from taking over the world.

Once your kiddos get over the obvious wires holding up the bats and the fake blood and even faker accents, they are going to fall in love with The Monster Squad for the first time and you can bet if watched this one as a kid you are definitely going to fall in love with it all over again as an adult!!

I would like you to know that the Monster Squad is one of my favorite movies from childhood, as well! AND, it is next to the Lost Boys and the Goonies on my DVD shelf, also. It just rocked back then and it does now. I just stumbled onto your site today and just reading through your stuff, you have made me laugh. You seem like a great dad. And any dad who works the Monster Squad DVD is an awesome dad in my book. Kendra in KY
